Back in 2017, during our Humanities class, we embarked on a project that still resonates with me. Our documercial aimed to explore the essence of architecture through the eyes of both professionals and everyday people. My idea was to engage with architects in Baguio, asking them to share the one word they felt best encapsulated their field. We also wanted to hear from local residents who might not have a formal understanding of architecture but had their own unique perspectives on what an architect truly is.

Thanks to the encouragement and support of my instructor, I had the opportunity to expand our initial 2-3 minute documercial into something more meaningful. We decided to conduct interviews where participants could choose from six cards, each containing a thought-provoking question that required just a one-word answer. This approach allowed for a variety of insights and reflections:

  1. What's the best way for an architect to advertise themselves?

  2. How would you describe or define architecture?

  3. As an architect, what's your defining word?

  4. Draw something that symbolizes architecture.

  5. What's your biggest fear in the architecture profession?

  6. What do you love about architecture?

As I wandered through the vibrant streets from the city center to Navy Base Road and even ventured down Magsaysay Avenue, I was filled with hope and excitement to find more architects willing to share their thoughts. However, despite my best efforts, I struggled to find the time to piece together my recordings into a polished final product. At that time, I lacked the skills and tools necessary to bring my vision to life, which was disheartening.

Fast forward to today, and I am grateful for the advancements in technology, particularly AI, which have opened new doors for creativity. With its assistance, I have been able to draft a storyboard that captures the essence of what the extended version of our docummercial could have looked like. It’s a reminder that even when faced with challenges, there is always a chance to revisit our passions and share our stories in new and exciting ways.

It's a bit disheartening to think that you may never uncover the words that were spoken. However, there's a glimmer of hope in the idea that one day, if the records are still accessible, you might be able to piece together those fragments of conversation. What truly matters is the idea and the intention behind those words. I hope this resonates with you, as it reflects the universal experience of longing for understanding and clarity.
